Medieval castles used to be surrounded by moats for defense. Of course, there had to be a way for people to get in and out of the castle, so they also had bridges.
Last week, your challenge was to brainstorm all the limits between you and what you're working for - including non-negotiables (such as ethical boundaries), resources, skills, energy, etc. - and write those down.
In week three of our six-week look at building sustainable performance, we're going to break down that list into two categories: bridges and moats.
Bridges are the skills, resources, energy, tools, etc., that you need to reach your goal. This is the typical work of goal accomplishment.
Moats are what make the difference between that and sustainable performance. Moats are your non-negotiables: your ethical boundaries, your rest, how you're willing to be treated, how you prioritize the goal with other areas of your life.
Moats are the key to sustainable performance.
When we violate these, we deplete our energy, erode our sense of identity, shortcut our potential, weaken our support system.
Spend some time this week really thinking about what you are and are not willing to do to reach your goal.
