I can't overemphasize the importance of the well-being of leaders in supporting a positive organizational culture. When the leaders are healthy, they are sharp, engaged, thoughtful, energetic, compassionate, balanced and human. When the leaders are healthy – in their mind, body, spirit, & relationships – the organization and its members perform better and can meet their potential. We sometimes don’t even notice it, because we get into a state of organizational flow.
We definitely notice, though, when a leader is unwell. It can feel as if a stick has been shoved in the spokes. We don’t necessarily recognize it as a lack of wellness, though. But that is often what it is. This is why it’s imperative that leader development efforts include leader well-being, along with traditional leadership and management practices.
For a leader to lead well, they must be well. And when a leader leads well, those they lead and their organization can thrive!
