When I think of change, I’m reminded of the lyrics to the Mumford & Sons song “Delta” – “What’s behind I can clearly see. But that beyond that’s beyond me.” With the benefit of hindsight, the past is pretty clear. The future, however, can feel like a fog of unknown. Sometimes that uncertainty can cause us to stay in a situation that’s no longer the best for us, but we stay because the comfort of the known feels better than the discomfort of the unknown – even if we rationally know better.
Reflecting on our values can help us through the transition. Our values influence our priorities. They connect us to our “why.” They help us stay authentic and true to ourselves through the change.
Using our strengths allows us to bring our best self to the new challenge. But it’s not just about our individual self; our strengths also include our resources – other people and things in our environment that we can leverage as we move forward.
The next time you know you should make a change, but you feel uncertain about it, take some time to reflect on your values, your strengths, and your resources. This will help you assess your readiness to change and help you navigate towards the future you can’t yet see.
