Every summer, we ride our favorite trail around the local ski mountain. Last Friday was the day!
This is a multi-hour ride made even longer this year by some construction that necessitated a reroute, including a bunch of uphill switchbacks at the beginning of the route. By the time we got to the normal "good" part, I was already tired! We had a long way to go still.
When you're tired, it's easy to resign yourself to just getting through. You lose sight of why you're doing what you're doing and just get into survival mode. Or, you hyper-focus on obstacles. But your mind follows your gaze, and your body follows your mind, so when you look at an obstacle - especially when you're tired - that's exactly where you'll end up.
A better strategy is to look where you want to go. It keeps you on track and gives you a boost. It also helps you identify bigger challenges ahead to give you time to prepare.
This is the first of a six-part series about sustainable performance for high-impact leaders. To make the most of this, I recommend you take some time to pick one thing (personal or professional) that you want to work towards and write it down.
