be a light.

I want to share with you my final leadership principle from my personal mantra: be a light.

Although it is the most innate principle to me, I often hesitated to display it because I thought it didn't always align with my professions. However, as I learned about authentic leadership, I made a point to let this shine. The response I received was overwhelming - it was as if others felt free to be their true selves and recognize that their differences are their greatest strengths.

Being a light is not just about being authentic, it serves many positive purposes:

• It provides hope: during difficult times, it reminds us that there is goodness and a brighter tomorrow.

• It enables us to empathize with others and show compassion.

• It deescalates situations, which I’ve seen so often in law enforcement.

• It can elevate another person, their ideas, and their work.

• It inspires.

• It sparks positive change, not only within ourselves, but also in our relationships, organizations, and beyond.

I challenge you to find ways to be a light. A simple smile and a greeting to a stranger can make someone's day. Volunteering for a community event can make a huge difference. Being there for someone who is grieving or lonely can be a source of comfort. Sharing how you've overcome your own struggles to bring hope to someone else in their darkest hour can be a powerful act of kindness.
